RedStorm Scientific
Receives Phase I SBIR Grant for its Antiviral Initiatives

Houston, TX, June 18, 2003 – RedStorm Scientific announced today that it has been awarded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health.  The grant supports the continued design and development of therapeutic protein compounds effective against the West Nile virus.   RedStorm Scientific will use its FyrestarTM technology to design protein therapeutics that bind to the virus and interfere with cell infection.  The Fyrestar technology uses a computational platform to accelerate the development of protein therapeutics by offering unprecedented insight into their thermodynamic character and solution behavior.

"We are pleased that the NIAID chose to support RedStorm Scientific in the advancement of antiviral therapeutic compounds," said Dr. Karin Maxson, Director of Product Development. "Our antiviral initiative will accelerate the discovery of new treatments and preventives for the people living in parts of the country where mosquito control is a constant challenge.“

The West Nile virus arrived in the Western Hemisphere in 1999 and since that time, it has spread rapidly across the United States.  The Center for Disease Control recorded 4,156 cases in the United States in 2002.

The NIH awards SBIR grants to biopharmaceutical companies using a competitive application process.  These awards provide companies like RedStorm Scientific an incentive to undertake cutting-edge research projects that may lead to important advances in patient care.
